The Source of the name of Bingöl:

Bingöl have been dominated by several civilizations. Firstly the city was known as 'çewlik' or 'çolig', and it was a subdistrict of Palu town. In 1872 it became a town with the name of 'Çapakçur', in 1936 with the same name it became a province. In 1945 the city got the name as 'Bingöl'. There are a lot of legends about the name of Bingöl. One of them is ;

One day a hunter hunted a bird. He found a lake in order to clean the bird. While cleaning it, suddenly the bird alived and flied off. The hunter wentand informed villagers about the event. When they came, they saw that the lake was divided into one thousand pieces. They never found which was the lakethe hunter cleaned the bird. Villagers gave the name 'Hezar(Bin)göl', which means one thousand lake, to this area.

Geographical Location of the City:

The earthsurface of the city is very rugged and high. Its altitude is 1250 m. Mountains and hills cover a wide area in the city. Mountains and hillswhich are over 2000 m. were formed in 3rd geological age by tectonic movements. In addition, the city has a high earthquake risk.

Mountains: The city is very rugged and there are mountains which are over 3000m. Mountains surrounded all around the Bingöl Plain which is the largest plain of the city.

Plains: The largest plain of the city is Bingöl Plain. Beside this plain, there are also Genç, Karlıova, Sancak Plains and some other small plains.

Rivers: When we look its length Murat and Perisuyu are the most important rivers of the city,and also they are the longest branch of the Fırat river.

Lakes: The most important lakes of the city are Gölbahri, Verkis,Zırlır,Kuş,Manastır,İçme and Karlıgöl.

Temperature: The hottest month of the city is August and the coldest is January. The latitude and the altitude of the city play a big role on the temperature of the city.

Falling: As terrestrial climate conditions dominate the city falling is mostly seen in spring. In winter falling is snow.

Soil structure: In Bingöl,generally there are two types of soil group.They are brown and red soils which are on plains and alivvium soil which is on valleys.

Plantcover: Bingöl is one of the cities which have the richest forests of the East Anatolia. In these forests, oak is the dominating tree type.

Climate: In Bingöl, terrestrial climate conditions are seen. Summers are hot and dry, wintes are cold and snowing.

Transportation in the City: Airway, Highway and railway are in use in the city.

Population of the City: The population of the city is 267.184 (2016). The population of the city center is 150.626

Counties of the City: Karlıova, Genç, Solhan, Kiğı, Yedisu, Adaklı and Yayladere are counties of the city. Genç is known as the most developed county of the city.

Education in the City: In the city, beside an increase in the number of teachers, students, school materials, girl students and people who are literate.But it doesn't still reach the average of the country.

Economy of the City: The economy of the city mainly depends on agriculture and stock raising.

History and Tourism: Throughout the history, Hittite, Hurri, Urartu, Seljuk, Akkoyunlu, Safevi and the Ottoman Empire have ruled the region. Despite these civilizations, the region couldn't benefit from rich inheritance of these civilizations.

Castles: Castles in the city are Genç, Kralkızı, Kiğı, Çayboyu, Simani and Solhan Castles.

Monuments: Monuments in Bingöl are, Mürsel Paşa Monument in Kiğı, Şeref Square in Solhan and Azizan Monument in Karlıova.

Mosques: Kiğı Mosque in Kiğı, Ağaçkale Mosque in Solhan, Temran Mosques in Adaklı and Ulucami in the city center. Ulucami is one of the important mosques in the East Anatolia, also in Turkey.

Caves: Important caves in the city are Kiğı, Çiçektepe, Zağ, Kübik and Kalkanlı Caves.

Natural Beauties:

Yüzenada: The island, which is in Hazarşah village in Solhan, has an extraordinary nature event.

The Sunrise: In Kale Hill on Bingöl Mountains which is in Karlıova, the sunrise is very different and has an interesting scene. There are two places in the world where the sunrise is seen best. The first is in Alps in Switzerland, the second is in Klae Hill in Bingöl.

Nice Places in the City Center:

Kültür Park: It is in the city center. It had been started to be built in 1993 and finished in the same year. It is a recreation area.

Abdulkadir Sarı Park: It is in Kaleönü district in Bingöl. The name comes from ex-governor of the city. It is located on a large area.

Other Places: Soğukçeşme, Perisuyu, Murat valley, Aftor and Arzek Fountain are also important places in the in Bingöl.

Thermal Spring: From the standpoint of health tourism, Kös Thermal Spring is very attractive. It has 16 motels, 10 pensions, 49 rooms, 3 pools, 3 restaurants and a cafe. Native and foreign tourists come there for entertainement and treatment.

Folk Dances: Delilo, Kartal, Gövend, Çaçan, Çepik, Esmer, Meryemo, İkiayak and Diz kırma are famous folk dances in the city.

Meatballs: İçli, sulu, çiğ and potato meatballs.

Pickles: Pickled cabbage, picked peppers, tomato, mixed and cucumber pickle.

Sweet Desserts: Kadayıf, squash, aşure and helva.

Meals: Löl, mastuva, kılıç, turakin, serin and ayran soup.
